Mellow Yellow

Had I never discovered macro, would I have noticed?

I was amazed when I downloaded this photo into my computer at the glittering shade of yellow in the flower. Our heavenly father takes pains with the details of everything He creates.

Have you ever looked into the heart of a flower?...I love their delicacy, their disarming innocence, and their defiance of life itself. ~ Princess Grace of Monaco

Thankful Thursday - A place for everything

You'll find a friend in the pages of a book.

Of the things I left behind in New York, books are one of the things I missed the most. Books become like friends when they help you through life's many problems. When my children came down with chicken pox, I found helpful tips in my books. Instead of the recommended calamine lotion, I found a suggestion to use cold cream fresh from the refrigerator. (It did relieve their itching better and keep the scarring down to a minimum.) I also keep aloevera in my fridge for burn relief in the kitchen. I found tips for child care, healthier ways to cook, tips for getting through those teen years and the list goes on.

I've replaced my books and have even more than before.

In a previous post I disclosed a site my friend Jeannie told me about where she has ordered her favorite books for a penny and I continually find books at thrift stores for a quarter, but where can I put all these books??? Short of building a library :-) I need some place to keep them so my home does not become too cluttered and so I can locate the particular book I need when I need it.

Even though I give books away, I have tons to store.

I donate and pass books on to others if I no longer want them. I have even found a place that swaps books for more books.

Tiger knocks the books down if they are in his way.

And sometimes Tiger gets a bit klutzy and they end up scattered on the floor giving me a continual job of picking them up. Jeannie had a piece of furniture in her barn she was no longer using. They removed the shelves to use elsewhere and she asked if I wanted it. It was a true blessing. I bought a  pine board at Home Depot for less than $5. and had it cut for free. She left the shelf brackets so I only needed to put the boards in it and put my books away. Look at all the books I can see at one glance, and these are not in Tiger's way! Thanks, Jeannie. I love it!

Have You Eaten Blue Potatoes?

There are more antioxidants in blue potatoes.

While browsing through a seed catalog I came across seeds for blue potatoes. The idea compelled me to research. Is this true? Are there really blue potatoes and if so how does the nutrition vary from red, white, or yellow potatoes? This past year I have enjoyed researching and trying out new foods and here is a sampling of some of the articles I have published about strange or unusual (to me) foods or herbs:

Add Extra Anti-oxidants to Your Diet with Blue Potatoes

Try a grapefruit that is naturally sweet.

Have you ever wondered about eating a pummelo? I did and enjoyed it. They taste like grapefruit without the bitterness, and can grow to reach 9 pounds!

Heal your heart with hawthorn berries.

While researching for an article about alternative medicine for hypertension I came across very promising information about hawthorn berries. The hawthorn berry has long been used for cardiac health and by clicking the above link you can learn more about what we have found out during studies on this berry.

Relax with catnip.

Some time ago I picked up catnip plants and began to pinch off leaves to brew myself tea. I'm generous with my cats. I shared my find with them. I was surprised when I was talking to a friend about catnip tea that not everyone knows how relaxing a cup of catnip tea is. For more herbs that will help you live with the stress in your life read here.

Red clover helps women.

Another herb that I have eaten ever since I can remember is red clover. As a child I would pull the sweet little petals from the flower head and eat them never realizing that red clover was a herb. To find out if you should take red clover read here.

Should we eat Osage oranges?

I'm only going to add one more edible that caught my interest over the past year, and that is Osage oranges or hedge apples. I was asked by a good friend of mine to research this fruit for its cancer fighting properties. It took a little work to uncover information about this little known fruit, but it was fascinating. My friend Jeannie took me to an Osage orange farm just a little ways from here, and now I have one in my freezer (pictured above). I found this research very interesting. If you are a little curious you can read here.

Your input is valued.

None of the articles I have written are conclusive. Sometimes the information, particularly about herbs is sketchy online. I am sure that much could be added and if you are aware of further information, please be kind enough to share. I love learning and the quest is never over. It is my hope to add information that will enable us to live healthier and happier.

Take care and Gd bless!
